Chapter fifteen

WHERE THERE’S A WILL, THERE’S AWAY

Gabriel and Alex went back to her apartment the following day. Not knowing what she would need for the meeting at the law firm, they made sure she had at least two forms of identification. Alex already had her driver’s license, so she picked up her passport as well.

At 2:00 p.m., they pulled up to the address given in the letter. Instead of a run-down building, the legal offices were in a modern high-rise building. It was located on the waterfront not far from Gabriel's condominium. They rode a glass elevator to the top floor. A bright hallway led to the spacious law offices of Bryers, Michelson, and Donner. They entered a luxurious, well-appointed waiting area full of windows and leather chairs. The walls were lined with so many legal books, it would put a library to shame. Additionally, in the center, there was a gourmet beverage station.

Alex glanced between herself and Gabriel. She was aware that neither were suitably dressed for a serious business meeting. She was ready to voice her concern when an administrative assistant appeared. She escorted them to a spacious private corner office. After confirming they did not want any further refreshments, they were left alone to wait.

"Uh, not sure I need to be concerned with my identity being scammed from this place." Alex laughed nervously.

"Yes, this is pretty impressive," Gabriel agreed, and then they both fell silent, waiting.

Several minutes later, two middle-aged professionals, both with salt-and-pepper hair, entered the office. They introduced themselves to Gabriel and Alex. One was the estate executor, Wilfred Donner. He was a giant of a man who must have played college basketball in his younger days. The other man was the managing partner of the firm, Benjamin Michelson. Michelson clearly had a fondness for wearing colorful bow ties.

Pleasantries were exchanged, and credentials confirmed. Donner proceeded to inform Alex of the terms of the will. Donner explained, "This is one of the more unusual wills I've seen. The entire estate was placed in trust for three years. At the end of that period, the trustees were to select a beneficiary. The notification had to occur on the third anniversary of Mr. Fowler's passing. The will was quite specific on this point. Miss Kincaid was declared the board’s selection. We were provided the details of how to contact her."

"Yes, but this seems eccentric. Is it even legal? And was there no one else named in the will? Perhaps a distant relative, more deserving?" Alex inquired.

"No worries on the legalities. The will is quite binding and legal. It was appropriately witnessed, and no other beneficiaries were indicated," Donner affirmed.

The attorneys ran down the list of holdings. Alex was stunned to discover she was now a wealthy woman. She'd inherited several homes. Some were located abroad. She also received a healthy portfolio of assets. She could live off the interest income comfortably. She never had to do another day of work!

"I need to confirm again what you are saying.
